Chiwetel Ejiofor's trajic family tale

British hopeful Chiwetel Ejiofor has overcome devastating heartbreak to become a contender for tonight’s best actor Oscar, reports the Sunday People.

Ejiofor hopes to add the Academy Award to the Bafta he won last month for Steve McQueen’s intense drama, 12 Years a Slave.

It would be a high point for the actor who, at just 11, saw his dad Arinze, 39, die in a head-on crash with a lorry after a wedding in the family’s native Nigeria.

Ejiofor, 36, permanently scarred on his forehead in the smash, said his musician and pop singer dad inspired him to act.

He said: “I have a constant reflective relationship with (my dad). As I get closer to the age he was when he died, the relationship is becoming more acute. There’s a constant dynamic that will influence the kind of work I do.”

He added: “When tragedy strikes in a family there’s a sort of unspoken contract that you’ll pull together for everybody else.”
