A 2013 Social Media
Report by Alder Consulting, a creative online intelligence firm, has
ranked the Redeemed Christian Church of God as number one in its faith
category.
According to the report, the RCCG beat
the Daystar Christian Centre and the Elevation Church to emerge as the
leading religious organisation that is “effectively” using social media
to reach its audience.
Also, the report ranked RCCG’s General
Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who has a combined online following of
1,823,846 on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+, as the cleric with
the most prolific use of social media.
Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian
Centre, Rev. Sam Adeyemi, and the Presiding Bishop, the Living Faith
Church, David Oyedepo, were first and second runners-up, respectively.
The rankings were based on a public poll
and judgment of a team of experts who assessed brands, organisations
and individuals who use “social media effectively in Nigeria.”
The experts, who worked on the
nominations made by 1, 378 tech-savvy individuals drawn from different
parts of the country, include Google Communications and Public Affairs
Manager for Anglophone West Africa, Taiwo Kolade-Ogunlade; Business
Lead/ Chief of Staff to Facebook’s Vice President (Global Marketing
Solutions), Morin Oluwole; and ICT Development Consultant, Gbenga Sesan.
In the policy category, a former
Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, towered above political
economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, and Minister of Finance and Coordinating
Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in the ranking.
In the governance ranking, the Ekiti and
Lagos State Governments tied in the top spot as the Federal Inland
Revenue Service came second.
Other government institutions that were
recognised in the governance category are the Independent National
Electoral Commission and the Osun State Government.
Guaranty Trust Bank beat the United Bank
for Africa and First Bank of Nigeria to second and third place, in the
banking category.
GTB was acknowledged for its use of social media in
customer service, consumer engagement, and its online visual appeal.
Multi-millionaire investor and
philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, emerged winner in two categories for
deploying the new media in encouraging entrepreneurship and business
orientation among Nigerian youths.
In the foreword to the report, the
Founder and Principal, Alder Consulting, Mr. Leke Alder, said the
compilation of the report was to encourage the use of social media for
public good.
According to him, the strength of social
networks has grown “exponentially”, thereby making them serve as the
voice to the voiceless citizens of Nigeria.
