Rantings Of A Frustrated Gunner

Honestly, it is too early to start complaining or moaning about Wenger's team selections and tactics. But after the abject display against Dortmund it is almost impossible not to complain about one or two things (could be even three, four or more).

The absence of a proper defensive midfielder in the team and the failure of Wenger to buy one still baffles me. All the heavy defeats the team suffered against other top-four teams were mostly due to the fact we didn't have a good defensive midfielder. I thought the issue would be addressed this season.

Against City, the first goal Arsenal conceded came after a counter attack, against Dortmund, both goals came after counter attacks. Teams always stroll through Arsenal's midfield during counter attacks because of the absence of a good defensive midfielder. It looks almost too easy at times. Flamini and Arteta are not good enough, Arteta is even worse. They are okay against small sides, but against top teams they are usually exposed. How Wenger still doesn't see or know this still remains a mystery.

Wenger's stubbornness, rigidity and tactical inflexibility during big games is annoying and very sickening. This is why Arsenal have found it hard in recent times to beat most of the big sides. Wenger usually adopts the same tactics for all the big games. He is never willing to change how he approaches any of the big games. He always sets his team up to attack despite the fact the team lacks a good DM. That's why the team harldly wins against big sides, they will always have equal or more possession than the opposition but the result is never in their favour.

I don't believe this is because Wenger is tactically naive or inept, i believe it is personal, an ego thing. If people like us that have managed zero games can see the problem and solution, then an experienced manager like Wenger, should know too, if not better.

Ozil and Cazorla are more technically gifted and older than Ramsey and Wilshere. If anyone should be sitting on the bench or being played out of position, it should be Ramsey or Wilshere, They are still both very young, they can still learn from the bench or by playing out of position. Cazorla and Ozil should be playing in the middle, they are better suited to that position. Against Dortmund, Wilshere and especially Ramsey could not hold on to the ball in midfield. What is the point of playing players out of position when those in their position are performing poorly?

How many games does Wenger need before he will find out that Ozil is useless as a winger and that the team suffers whenever he is played as a winger? Until Wenger starts changing his tactics and selections, the team will, sadly, especially in big games, continue to underachieve.
