Nice catch, Michelle!
Barack and Michelle Obama's weekend
visit to Palm Springs, California, started out with a wardrobe
malfunction for the first lady - but luckily the president was there to
save the day.
The first
couple were stepping off Air Force One at the Palm Springs International
Airport on a balmy Friday evening when a gust of wind nearly blew up
the voluminous skirt of Mrs Obama's green-and-black summer frock.
The
50-year-old first lady was photographed struggling to tame the
billowing fabric, with a relaxed Mr Obama walking alongside her with a
rueful smile on his wife.
Eventually, the commander-in-chief
came to his wife's rescue, placing a helpful hand on the back of the
dress to prevent an embarrassing ‘Marilyn Monroe’ moment.
The
Obamas were greeted on the tarmac by a delegation of local dignitaries,
among them Senator Barbara Boxer with her husband, Rep Paul Ruiz, a
Democrat from Palm Desert and the mayor of Rancho Mirage, The Press-Enterprise reported.
'I told him to stay hydrated,' Ruiz, who is a doctor, said of the president. 'He said he enjoyed coming here before.'
Describing the first lady, a somewhat star-struck Congressman Ruiz told the station KESQ that she was graceful and seemed excited about spending time in Palm Springs.
For
her first visit to Coachella Valley, the 50-year-old Mrs Obama – a
notorious fashionista - chose a sleeveless summer frock with a plant
motif paired with flat scrappy sandals perfect for the 100-degree
weather.
It is the
president's third visit to Coachella Valley in the last year, but it is
the first time that Obama has brought his wife along.
Before
jetting off to California for some presidential R & R, which will
likely involve a few rounds of golf at the exclusive Thunderbird Country
Club in Rancho Mirage, the Obamas visited the Standing Rock Siux Tribal
National in North Dakota.
This
morning, Barack and Michelle will be off to Orange County for a Laguna
Beach Democratic National Committee fundraiser, followed by the
commencement address at University of California at Irvine.
The
first couple will be back in the picturesque Coachella Valley later in
the day, and they will remain there for the rest of the weekend.
